Site or Blog: Which to Use and What Apps To Make Them?

If you are willing to be HONEST with an open mind, read on.

Newbies:

  • I don’t know where to begin
  • It’s too expensive
  • I’m not techy, do I need a site or blog?
  • What’s the difference between a site or blog? Which is best for my needs?
  • Pros/Cons of a Blog
  • What software or platform to use for my blog or site?
  • I’m not a designer, I don’t know anything about color, layout or type
  • What is involved in building a site or blog?
  • What are the costs?
  • How long does it take?
  • My site is awful, costs too much to have it done again, I’m not techy
  • Pros/Cons Facebook or Tumblr for your site or home base
  • My site is hard to use, doesn’t look like I want
  • Take a look at my site
  • Hiring a web designer: how much input they might need from you
  • What to do to help web designers create a site which expresses your business and who you are
  • Web designers don’t necessarily ‘design’ a site as much as build it, in too many cases
  • What content do I need to provide my web designer?

IF you already are way past that, you might still have questions. Here’s a few:

  • I have a site, but it’s outdated, looks old, hard to use, burned out on dealing with it. What else is out there?
  • Tip: if you have heard about WordPress for years, but heard it’s hard or are tired of updating all the time, check out Squarespace! It’s a great alternative.
  • ANYONE with a small business should check out Squarespace. I’m seeing so many businesses using it. Plus for other things, Just look at their templates and real sites.

I look at and discuss real sites using WordPressSquarespace, Wix and Weebly in my Web Class. I specifically chose sites which are perfect for each of those platforms. Plus discuss serious flaws in a few sites. It’s hard to be critical about existing sites without upsetting people, you know.

If you are operating from myths and falsehoods, you are doomed to failure. Your life, biz and choice.

Few can succeed without being online mindfully. Life transformative.

Only if you believe, acquire and update your skills and do the work.

  • Product spreadsheet is vital if more than a few products
  • Images, descriptions and more

  • Free vs paying for an online store
  • If I have a store, do I also need a blog?

Which Image or Photo Apps to Use?

Image apps:

  • Do you want to create social media images, plus images for your blog, site, email?
  • Are you using something, but confused about it or wonder if an alternative?
  • What would you like to do?
  • What are you creating?
  • Are you creating for social, your blog, email, print, merchandise?
  • What software do you use?
  • File formats: when to use png, jpg, tif or psd
  • Color space: RGB, CMYK, Grayscale or Bitmap (this matters)
  • Raster or Vector: makes a difference in appearance
  • Resizing or changing resolution problems
  • How to match colors online to app color picker
  • How to measure images online vs in apps

The most used Image software for most mobile, phone, laptop users is Canva. Free version and paid, depending upon features.

Most high end graphic artists, fine artist, photographers, web designers, desktop publishers use Adobe’s Photoshop and Lightroom. Both for only $10/month. Photoshop is far more powerful than Canva. Lightroom saves me so much time and gives me unique creative options. I make back that $10 quickly.

OR all three apps.

Not an either/or situation. If you work with any images, then discussing the varying differences and similarities of these programs will save you SO much time and energy!

Plus, spending $10/month for powerful software which saves you time and helps you stand out from the crowd is worth it! So don’t look only at cost!

Photography Questions
  • Pros/Cons of DSLR camera, high end or lower end vs Phones
  • What camera should I get?
  • What are all those dials on the camera? Which should I use?
  • Difference between Auto and Manual settings
  • I don’t understand different lenses
  • Which lens(es) should I get or use?

I can give brief overviews of above questions.

To really grasp photography, not waste your time and money:

  • Look at photos, taken with different lenses, at different settings and various lighting.
  • With explanation how this lens or that setting affects the image.

That is exactly how I designed and created my Photos: Create Storytelling Images on a Budget class! I cover all that and more.

VERY unique and effective way of teaching Photography. I’ve taken many online classes, bought and borrowed from library books and magazines. Nothing helped.

I taught myself and realized I had to share and teach others! Every picture tells a story. I explain in down to earth language, with so many photos you can gain a good understanding. Then go create amazing, stunning, memorable photos!

Color, Design, Layout, Type

Totally Essential Topics. Yes, this is incredibly long. You don’t have to read it all. I’ve found so much resistance from people with very marketable products and/or services or causes. Many ignore visuals and wonder why they are not more successful.

First, there’s fear and ignorance. Fear we are not capable. Ignorant because we are told using our imaginations and making stuff is silly and a waste of time. Sadly our schools don’t teach us how to be creative. Not visually, not in words, not in music.

We are born creative! Children tell the most imaginative stories. They draw wondrous images of their family, home, trees, pets, the sun. Right? We’ve all seen that. (If not, Google it. Pinterest has many images created by children).

A picture is worth a thousand words. Every picture tells a story. Right?

But how to design, create and use visuals? What elements tell that story? What makes images and layouts work for our goals, dreams and missions?

IF you need to know more, you’ll read on.

Or if you ‘get’ it, you’ll enroll in “Watch. Create. Shine.” NOT available in any Coaching package. This is a VISUAL topic. Which I cover in every module, every lesson, every class. It’s in my DNA. Yours too.

I guide you to tap into your own creativity. Find inspiration when you are stuck.

Visual storytelling. It’s how we connect with others.

  • We are bombarded with images
  • Told to make social media images
  • Take photos
  • Create videos
  • Focus on visuals
  • Told to buy or use this software or that app
  • What about using color, type, design, layout effectively?
  • Where is thoughtful, mindful, effective guidance about these topics to achieve your goals?
  • Too often, MIA. Crickets
  • Worse, some really bad information being taught as if gospel. Which only confuse people. Blind leading the blind.
  • Covered minimally in most marketing, branding, teaching, writing, web design [always more about programming than design] and other webinars, PDFs, blog, classes, bundles, packages.

I don’t teach marketing, branding, web design, etc. I stay in my lane: visual storytelling. If only those others would refer people to trained, educated, experienced, successful working artists and graphic designers … whatta better experience we all would have!

[I am not dissing some fine pros out there. Just we can’t know everything about everything, right? If you haven’t studied these topics, and not just the latest trends, which come and go, then please kindly STFU!]We are NOT natural artists and designers for effective communication and marketing. Any idea how many years of study, work and creativity to ‘get’ this?

When was the last time you studied how to DESIGN, not MAKE, but DESIGN? Graphics? Layouts? Downloadable PDFs? Videos? Yet you are expected to be to excel in all that. Unrealistic, right?

So learn from proven pros! Not just the latest trend or what everyone else is doing. You think I’d be the most published early punk photographer IF I photographed who everyone else was photographing? THAT is what sets my work apart. My topics.

When I was starting out, Iggy Pop said I “took better photos than his photographer.” He asked me where I’d been. I replied, “In college, earning art degrees.” He said, “That explains it.”

We talk about what software to use for online, whether blog or store, social media or email. Do we talk about how design affects the outcome? Nope.

I often ask people if they ever studied art or design. Why did they chose certain colors, images, decided to format or not format their text a certain way. Or why their blog, site or ecommerce store look a certain way. Can YOU relate?

  • I never studied art
  • I took an art class, but doesn’t help what I’m doing now
  • I’m being creative [by creating hard to read content or strange color and/or type usage]
  • I’m authentic [by not bothering to make this attractive or readable]
  • I can’t be bothered
  • Someone else designed it
  • Too expensive and/or time consuming to redo
  • I am not an artist
  • I am not techy
  • I just can’t deal
  • What’s the big deal?
  • I don’t like it, but don’t know what to do about it

That’s fine if you are getting the results you want. I can’t argue with success. But if you are not getting the results you want, keep reading.

WHY are do we use visuals and words?

  • Humans are natural storytellers
  • Listen to children and their vivid imaginations
  • Their stories
  • Their images
  • YOU have that power and ability within you
  • Let it out!

Why express yourself visually?

  • To share info
  • Touch hearts and minds
  • To call to action so someone responds
  • Buys, supports, enrolls, joins, changes their minds, feels or takes action, per our lead. Right?

How do we Communicate? Before humans developed oral or written languages, they spoke in images.

  • Proof is in cave paintings.
  • Later, carvings
  • Body embellishment
  • We don’t have to be school in Egyptian hieroglyphics and other visual languages to ‘get’ some idea what they were saying. Stories they told.

Now we use:

  • Images (still and moving)
  • Words
  • Sounds (speech, music, sound effects)

How we use words, images and sounds relates to Content.

How do we organize Content?

  • Logically
  • Creatively

Why? Do NOT make people work!

  • Don’t hide info
  • Don’t make it hard to find info
  • Don’t omit info.

Whatever you create or others create for you must be:

  • Attractive
  • Compelling
  • Stunning
  • Memorable
  • Meaningful
  • Informative or Instructive or at least pretty, ya think?

Have you ever looked at what your successful competition businesses or causes are doing? REALLY looked? Or any successful marketing, branding, creatives, healers, social justice warriors, even news sites are doing? Or read any blogs or tips from sites specializing in these topics?

Do you care:

  • Why text lines up the left, like I do here?
  • Or text sometimes centered?
  • Or use color or make a line or a few words bold?
  • Why images similarly size?
  • Want to show before and after of say, organizing your office, art studio, home or weight loss or bodybuilding? Show BIG images of before and after. Not postage stamp size, fuzzy images on the far left of the screen.
  • Or do you think your site should automatically reduce so people can see all on phone, without having to scroll?
  • Or one of my faves (not), your site is stuck on left side of the screen. Which makes it hard to read, when using a big monitor.

If you don’t care, why should anyone care about what you have to offer?

SHOW people YOU are thoughtful and offer something of value.

Say it with images, layout, content, organization. Ya think?

So that’s what I talk about in ALL my classes. Social media. IRL (in real life).

Are you ready to be more effective visually? Enroll in “Watch. Create. Shine.” This is NOT available in any Coaching package. It’s a purely VISUAL topic.

I’ve spent YEARS legally licensing images, taking photos, working on this for you.

Every picture tells a story, right? So look at the images and listen as I share the wisdom of designers, artists, photographers, layout pros and more. You can’t find this anywhere else.

From someone with decades of studying, teaching, making. I walk this walk. Look at my site! Look at my punk photos.

Where else can YOU learn from and be inspired by someone with photos used by

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (one of the MOST prestigious museums in the world)
  • Smithsonian (America’s National Museum)
  • Grammy Museum
  • Rock Hall of Fame
  • Experience Music Project
  • More photos published than ANY other west coast punk photographer, first gen.
  • Docs, books, mags, sites, merch and more
  • Plus my college art exhibited in museums and galleries, pre-punk!
  • Deeply immersed into the online marketing and branding world.

Are you ready for fun, creative empowerment and better visual engagement? Nothing feels so good as making art.

Look around, do you ever see sad kids or adults creating something out of nothing?
